Today’s AI revolution has been driven by a simple belief: that machines can surpass human intelligence by learning from vast amounts of cheaply collected big data processed by high-speed computers. This belief, centered around deep learning, has led to remarkable progress and widespread success. However, in this pursuit, crucial elements have been left behind—human experience, tacit knowledge held only by a few experts, and data that are rare or costly to obtain. In our lab, we challenge this trend by turning our focus to small data. By actively integrating human expertise and implicit knowledge into data analysis, we aim to uncover new insights and create value that big data alone cannot provide. Our goal is to apply small data analysis to the development of next-generation medical devices, medical AI, and the deeper understanding of complex diseases.
