Preface

matsuo-sensei

On behalf of the organizing committee of the 26th RIES-HOKUDAI International Symposium, we are honored to invite and welcome you to this the Japan-Taiwan-India Joint symposium, which will take place from November 26 to 27, 2025. Your participation, presentation, and active discussion are indispensable for the success of the symposium. RIES aims to pioneer new interdisciplinary fields by conducting diverse research and education programs, including optical science, materials science, life science, and mathematical science. To promote multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary programs, we organize the RIES-HOKUDAI International Symposium every year.

Thus, the RIES-HOKUDAI International Symposium has been held annually since 1999 and has a tradition of selecting a single Chinese character (Kanji) for unifying the multidisciplinary symposium. The Kanji selected for the 2025 Symposium is “共” [kyou]. Furthermore, this year's symposium will focus specifically on semiconductors and electronics, fields of increasing importance.

kanji-kyou

I would like to explain the meaning of the kanji character "共." Read as "kyou," it signifies "together" or "multiple." In Japan, it is often combined with other kanji characters to form new terms. It is commonly used in expressions such as "joint research" and "shared use." For this symposium, I selected this kanji character in the hope that Japan, Taiwan, and India will establish new research and educational relationships, particularly in the field of materials science focused on electronics.

We look forward to your participation in the symposium and your presentation of research and development achievements. We also look forward to your active involvement in the discussions.
