The 24th RIES-HOKUDAI INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM 開 (kai) was held on December 6-7, 2023, at the Suzuki Akira Hall, Frontier Research in Applied Sciences Building, Hokkaido University. This symposium is a joint event with the 8th International Symposium of Crossover Alliance to Create the Future with People, Intelligence and Materials (Five-Star Alliance) and 5+2 International Joint Symposium, and it is partially linked to the Network Joint Research Center (NJRC) for Materials and Devices.
It has become a tradition for this international symposium to choose a Kanji character that symbolizes the year’s symposium. The Kanji selected for the 2023 Symposium is “開” (Kai), meaning ‘open’ or ‘start’. It expresses our situation where the world is freed from the activity restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the world opens up again. While last year’s symposium was a hybrid of on-site and online events, this year’s symposium was held primarily as an on-site symposium.
Professor Hiroki R. Ueda, Department of Systems Pharmacology, Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo, delivered the keynote lecture online from the UK. He spoke on the familiar theme of human sleep-wake cycles, and the participants asked many questions. In the other lectures, active discussions occurred in the Q&A sessions and poster presentations.
The winners of the Poster Award were selected from the student poster presenters by the invited speakers and the faculty of the RIES, and were presented with their certificates by Prof. Hideharu Mikami, Chair of the International Symposium Committee.
The Best Poster Award went to Mr. Yuta Kazama (Laboratory of Interactive Functional Material), and the Poster Awards went to Mr. Ryu Hirooka (Laboratory of Information Biophotonics), Mr. Tianxu Gao (Laboratory of Molecular Device), and Mr. Kazuki Mukumoto (Laboratory of Information Biophotonics).
